Lain Iwakura, an awkward and introverted fourteen-year-old, is one of the many girls from her school to receive a disturbing email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda—the very same Chisa who recently committed suicide. Lain has neither the desire nor the experience to handle even basic technology; yet, when the technophobe opens the email, it leads her straight into the Wired, a virtual world of communication networks similar to what we know as the internet. Lain's life is turned upside down as she begins to encounter cryptic mysteries one after another. Strange men called the Men in Black begin to appear wherever she goes, asking her questions and somehow knowing more about her than even she herself knows. With the boundaries between reality and cyberspace rapidly blurring, Lain is plunged into more surreal and bizarre events where identity, consciousness, and perception are concepts that take on new meanings. Written by Chiaki J. Konaka, whose other works include Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain is a psychological avant-garde mystery series that follows Lain as she makes crucial choices that will affect both the real world and the Wired. Serial Experiments Lain is a wonderful anime has a mixture of symbolism and various themes focusing on society and technology. I love how it’s very distinct on the details such as episodes. The episodes are called layers and have a different title card each time. I would’ve never stumbled upon it through my friends but through YouTube. I saw a review of it. However, the only thing that made me come back was the opening. After watching it, this anime sparked my urges on wanting to watch more anime shows that are psychology themed.

Lain is a regular 14-year-old girl who doesn’t have any experience with computers. Through a dead schoolmate sending emails and numerous strange occurrences, Lain delves deeper into the Wired. As she uncovers more about the Wired, nothing is what it seems to be... Even herself.

◝┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈◜

There are many characters that play a lot of factors to the story, so I’ll start with the main individuals then the groups. (Family and Knights)

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Lain is the main protagonist in the anime show. She didn’t start off as a favorite considering a lack of character at first. I thought she was very monotone at best. However, I loved the character afterward towards the end of the show. The problem for myself to understand Lain easily is her personalities. There are three various personalities Lain has that represent ID, Ego, and Superego. (Explaining her theme later on it.) I was surprised that Lain had a very different personality when she is in Wired than in reality. I love the progression of her overall personality taking form.

One thing to add is that Lain is simplistic on her character design. She wears regular clothes such as the bear onesie, but her hairstyle makes her stand out. Lain’s asymmetrical hairstyle with her hairclip makes her stand out but doesn’t scream at your face for attention. Moreover, she is best memorable for her ever-switching personality at best.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Alice is Lain’s first and only best friend that was introduced in Layer 01. I have fawned of her when she took an effort to befriend Lain. Instead of getting mocked and left alone like Alice’s friends, Alice brings Lain with her to any social gathering. An example is the Cyberia bar on Layer 01. I love that Alice has a flaw as well from her optimistic attitude. Her flaw shown near the end when she falls in love with a teacher in Layer 08.

I also love how the show made Alice and Lain’s relationship far deeper than any other characters in the series. Lain doesn’t bond with her family as she did with Alice. She even re-write and erased memories of everyone for Alice to become happy. With Alice optimism and her effort on becoming friends, I think she was represented as humanity to keep Lain sane between Wired and reality.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Eiri is the main antagonist of the anime show. He was the key designer of Protocol 7. However, the code his conscience and will into the program to control over it. After Eiri coded his conscience, he was fired and committed suicide. His views on the world were somewhat shocking and agreeable at first. Eiri states that mankind must evolve by removing their physical abilities, and digitalize their self in the Wired. However, that view has further implications. (Will also explain in the theme as well.)

I love his manipulative abilities on to Lain. He uses the group called Knights to make Lain give up her humanity. By making Lain lose her humanity, he will able to use Lain’s abilities and become god-like. Eiri also persuaded Lain that he was the creator of Lain and that he was a god. He influenced Lain so much to the point that she stayed in her room becoming machine-like.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Lain’s family consist of her surrogate parents and one older sister. Lain’s mother Miho is very indifferent and shows no emotion at all. However, Lain’s father Yasuo is lively with his technology. Yasuo was a strange character to me to this day. Even though he was a surrogate father that pretended to be Alain’s father, he commented on how he loved Lain as a father. He also showed up at Layer 13 when he talked to Lain after she erased herself out of everyone’s memory.

Lain’s older sister Mika always points out Lain’s strange personality and habits. The first view of Lain’s family was off. Lain didn’t interact with her family. An example can be the family dinner.

Lain’s family dinner was not lively. The atmosphere was uneasy because there wasn’t any interaction at all. I felt bad for Mika when she was changed by the Knights. After hallucinations and strange phenomenons stating “Fulfill the prophecy”, she starts losing her mind. She isn’t with good terms with her sister, but she has her own life. However, she just became a human modem making noises and no life in her eyes.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The Knights were a regular group of people that is controlled over Eiri. The group influences Lain’s actions into knowing her Wired self. The first person that influenced Lain was Chisa. Chisa was the dead schoolmate that committed suicide for Wired instead of reality. With the curiosity of Chisa’s death, Lain was into her emails and computers.

The next Knight member that influenced Lain was J.J and Taro. Lain first encountered J.J and Taro in Cyberia. J.J assumed that Lain was the Lain in the Wired and gave her an envelope each time she visits. Lain became confused because she wasn’t in the Wired yet. The identity crisis that Lain started to have solidifies when Taro wanted a date to the Wild Lain which belongs to the Wired.

I love how clever the Knights made Lain so insecure about herself by her fake family all the way to her fascination with technology. An example would be the character Boss. The Boss hired Men in Black to protect Lain and giving Lain the latest technology through Yasuo. He also goes to the extent of inviting Lain and losing her sanity by asking her questions.

-|| Themes ||-

Serial Experiments Lain OnlineKissanime

There are various themes that Serial Experiments Lain can be dissected upon with the symbolism. However, I am going to focus on three themes personality vs online personality, views of Eiris, and Lain’s three personalities.

An individual’s personality is truly unique. It’s a combination of what social environment influences an individual can be in. In my perspective, Serial Experiment Lain handled this theme quite perfectly. When J.J and Taro talked about the Wired Lain, Lain was shocked. I was shocked as well because Lain is a meek girl in reality. Wired Lain is more confident and harsh on others. In Layer 02, Lain witnessed a man shooting in Cyberia. After he killed two people, the man insanely talks to Lain knowing her Wired self.

Lain then stated, “No matter where you go everyone is connected.” This change in personality to the man showed a glimpse of what Wired Lain is. After Lain gained the psyche chip, she was able to talk to people. She avoids her friends and joins the Wired in her free time.

This theme personally relates to me. I’m more outgoing online rather than the outside world. I also treat people differently online rather than real life. I keep always be friendly and outgoing while chatting with my online friends. However, the real-life self is just calm and reserved most of the time.

“The body is nothing but a machine. If the physical limitations of the body restrict mankind’s evolution, it would be as if the fall of the species called “man” had already been decided by a God that doesn’t even exist.”

Eiris’ philosophy is agreeable to me at first when watching the anime show. By having an online self with no physical form, you will have no suffering. However, near the end of the show, I realized there are many implications to it. A person can’t tell if they are truly real instead of becoming a machine. I’ll refer to the Matrix.

Serial Experiments Lain Online

The Matrix has an illusion of reality while Serial Experiment Lain destroys the boundary of Wired and reality. They both used technology to burr the lines of what’s real or not. Without a sense of humanity such as Alice, Lain could have killed herself and given herself to Eiris. Emotions that differ between human and machine. Without suffering, there would be no emotions of anger, envy, and doubt. These emotions help shape what makes us human than an illusion of what a person is.

I also liked how skapbadoa explained Lain’s personalities, so I’ll link it below.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Lain’s personalities is an excellent textbook example of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic personality theory. It is an extreme example considering Lain switches personalities very easily. The three desires that are in that theory are Id, Ego, and Superego. The id is instinct which is leaning over desires of what a person truly wanted. Ego is a reality, this desire is to reality. This ego compromises Id with morality which is Superego. Superego is the morality of a person who does everything for justice.

Lain in reality represents Ego. She compromises with her own desires but has morality. An example can be asking her father to get her new technology. Lain was timid to ask but tells her father. Wired Lain is Superego. Her brash confidence doesn’t compare to her finding justice. An example of this would be figuring out why the children praising a false Lain in the sky. The last personality of Lain is Anti-Lain that represent Id.

Anti-Lain was created by the Knights, however, it is Lain’s traits that she hated about herself. An example of this would be telling Alice’s crush throughout the Wired.

Serial Experiments Lain is a work of art for an anime show. There are many visual representations like the typography to the perspective angles. It is an experience to watch Serial Experiments Lain, and there is no definite answer for this anime show. There are underlying messages of society and technology such as Yasuo’s father telling Lain that Wired is only a medium of communication to the online and real self.

Serial Experiments Lain Watch Online

I have a rule of not rewatching anime shows, but for this exception of this anime show. I suggest not watching it all at once, and speed run through it. It’ll bore yourself entirely if you don’t enjoy the pace it is in. Overall, a really good short anime to be memorable for delving into theories and philosophy.
